Lost another pound, and ate at an Italian Restaurant Tonight

Yeah, the scale showed another pound drop this morning.  But I ate out for dinner so hopefully it'll stay off.  But I chose grilled chicken and potatoes instead of pasta in cheese or cream, so hopefully it'll be ok.  We'll see.

Ate a donut again for breakfast.  Oh man, these special valentine donuts at Duncan Donuts are so good.  So, I'm enjoying. And I'm so busy at work I'm not snacking before lunch so that's good.

Duncan Donuts, Sbarro, and Mall Walking

I love donuts, and especially the ones Duncan Donuts has right now - these heart shaped yeast ones filled with frosting - one is cookie dough flavor and the other brownie flavor.  Crazy good.  They really aren't as bad as you'd think.  One donut is about 270 calories and 7 pts.  So, you're going to see those on my menu for the next few weeks.

I did a really fast brisk 30 minute walk at the mall today.  Felt great.  I also treated myself to a piece of thin crust pizza at Sbarro - again, not as bad as you might think - 470 cal and 12 points.  That's not that bad.

The way to lose weight and keep it off for good is not to eliminate all the best tasting foods, but to learn how to eat them in moderation. And so I am.

Holding still on my weight lost.  Waiting for it to drop again.  Hope it does.

Today's Menu:

Breakfast
1 1/3 Duncan Donuts (they gave me a sample, darn them) - 338 cal, 9 pts

Under ate again...

Didn't lose from yesterday, even though I barely ate.  Why? Well, the body has to have calories to live as well as burn. And if you eat too little, all your calories will be for your body to just function - think, heart beat, move, etc. and you won't have any calories to burn fat.  Seriously.  You can't go too low or you just don't lose.

I ate more today but still not enough.  I've just been trying to cut down the calories - eating leaner meals - and well, I guess I'm a little too good at this.  Never thought that would happen.

Lost a pound and really under ate today

Well, ice skating was great for the weight loss - the scale had a well deserved 1 pound loss this morning.  Good for me.

I have been super duper busy today and it's 10 PM and I've only eaten 1043 calories and 27 points. It's late and I'm too tired to write what I ate or eat anymore.  But hey, this certainly should help with my weight loss.

I did take a picture of my delicious dinner tonight - 3 oz chicken breast, 1/2 cup brown rice, 1/4 cup chow mein noodles, 2 T Edamame, 3 T stir fry sauce, and veges.  Super low cal and super delicious.

More tomorrow dear friend.

Ice Skating, Asian Sauce I like for veges

A group of my friends were going ice skating today.  Last time I went ice skating was over 20 years ago.  I had only skated 30 feet, slipped, fell and landed right on my head.  I was taken to the hospital by ambulance.  I had a concussion. And, my friends were going to the very same rink today.

I knew I needed to go.  Face that hurt and let me heal.  First time around I was clinging to the wall like a scared child.  But after a few laps, my body remembered how I did this for so many years as a child.  And it was a GREAT workout!  Wow, does it ever get the heart rate up.  And it was fun!

I think I am going to be doing this a lot often.  I mean, what a great way to work out in the winter!  So glad I went.

I had a good food day, although I kind of blew it on dinner.  Just ate McD's after the gathering after skating.  I was hungry and it was easy.  But I know I burned a lot skating so I think I'll be fine.

For lunch today I also took those great Asian veges you can get at Trader Joes and just stir fried them in a little olive oil, and then simmer them in my favorite Asian Sauce, East West Sweet Ginger.  Fabulous!

Data Analysis of all this stuff

I'm a technology person by day, and especially a data person.  So, I did some data analysis today.  I entered into a little database everything I've done since I started this on 1/2/2014 - total calories and points per day, per meal, exercise, and how it all relates to weight gain and loss.  Sadly, I don't see a direct correlation.  But overall, I think I just need to trim off a few calories and points a day.  I'm going to shoot for 200 less calories and 4 points less a day.

Official WW Weigh in - lost .4

Small loss this week. Hmm. that's good, but not good enough.

So here's my plan.  I'm going to study what I've been eating on average per meal and snack since I started this blog and come up with a per meal "budget" for about how much I should eat.  And then try to skim off about 200 calories or 4-5 points per day.  I think I can do that and that should help this move along.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.  That's why I'm doing this blog.  That's why I am trying Sensa.  And that's why I keep reassessing what I'm doing and modifying if needed.   Hopefully it'll pay off.  You may think I should be doing something else, but sorry, this is my life.  I must make my own choices and you yours.  Let's support one another and not judge.  We can learn together.  And we'll both grow and be better people.  That's my hope for us all.

More later.. gotta go live my day...

Tried "Freshi" for lunch today

I had to run an errand on my lunch hour at Yorktown Mall so I had a quick meal at a new place there, Freshi.  It's good in that it has fresh ingredients and if you ask you can get nutrition info.   But to my surprise most of the menu items kind of had a lot of calories.  Even the soups were 360-450 calories.  So I chose a salad that was only 360 calories, and added chicken.  Well, I was starving 2 hours later so it didn't keep me full very long.  I was famished by the time I got home after work, even after trying to curb my hunger with an apple and carrot stick snacks.  And, according to the menu board the salad was supposed to have won tons and instead it had walnuts.  Not a big deal, but I thought that was not good that they didn't actually serve me what I ordered.  So, they may have some execution issues.  But I will try the again, but I'll try something with more calories that fills me better, like a burrito or wrap.

I also gained back 2 of what I lost when I weighed this morning.  So weird. I didn't feel like I deserved that.  But oh well.  Today's starvation should help that so hopefully it'll fall off again.

I also made a new recipe tonight - pot stickers.  I didn't love them.  I won't make them again. But you have to try new stuff to find the great recipes.  These were just OK if you ask me. They are 45 cal/1 pt each.

Lost again, feeling good

Had a good drop on the scale this morning - 1 1/2 pounds dropped.  This is fabulous.  I am sooooo encouraged.  Moving into weight I haven't seen in awhile.  But I'm still massive and have a ton to drop, and I can gain in a sneeze, so I know how precarious this all is.  Must stay focused and on top of this.

I ate today pretty similarly to what I ate yesterday.  But I am working on trying out a new recipe - Asian potstickers, but I'm finding out that it has a lot of refrigeration and freeze steps so it's taking me 3 days to make these things!  I should be able to cook some for tomorrow's dinner finally.

Healthy 8

Howdy food fans.  Gained about a half pound yesterday.  Not much.  I'm still good.

One of the things I really like about Weight Watcher meetings is what I learn from the other members. Actually, I think that's the best part.  I'm even writing a book on one guys story and all he has shared.  He is pretty special.

One of the things I learned about at one of the meetings is Trader Joe's Healthy 8 (see picture).  These fresh, cut up veges are so great to use for lots of stuff, add to stir fry, soup, salads, really anything.  You get more volume, fill up, and wow, these are so great for you, too.  I put them on my salad tonight and I could barely finish my salad it was so filling.  Yep, that's that way to do it.

Today's Menu:
I made a delicious omelet with the salsa I made yesterday.  I use one full egg and two egg whites.

Dropped a pound and tried some new recipes today

I was happy to see another drop on the scale today.  Yeah!  Now I MUST keep it up!  Move forward, no more steps backward!

I had the day off today and after running errands and I did some cooking.  I made a tomatillo salsa that tastes fabulous.  It needs to sit for 2 days before it'll really be ready.  Mmm, can't wait to put that on my omelets, tacos/burritos, nachos, and more.  Zero Weight Watcher points (unless you eat a ton of it) and very low cal.

I also tried a new recipe - a Parmesan crusted chicken breast.  It was good but not fabulous, so I won't make it again.  Like I said yesterday, I'm picky when it comes to cooking.  If the recipe isn't amazing, I don't make it more than once.  My philosophy is that if the food is always amazing, I'm not going to overeat from feeling neglected or ripped off.  So, I cook the best stuff possible. Full flavor.  I count the calories/points, and stick to the portion size.

This is how I lost 70 pounds the last time (back in 2002-3)  It is what I like about the flexibility of the Weight Watchers Points program - all foods are allowed.  No forbidden foods.  You just have to not eat too much each day.  Duh.  So simple really.  That's why it works, too.  These diets than restrict food choices are not something you can do long term.  We must learn to eat the good foods of the earth without being large.  The points program does that (as does simply counting calories, too).

Today's Menu:

Breakfast:

1 Egg - 70 cal, 2 pts
.8 oz sharp cheddar cheese - 95 cal, 2 pts
1.8 ounces sourdough bread -130 cal, 3 pts
1 tsp. Smart Balance Light - 17 cal, 0 pts
2 slices thick cut bacon - 100 cal, 3 pts
1/2 McDonald's iced coffee with sugar free caramel - 45 cal, 2 pt

Lunch:
Great American Bagel
3/4 Turkey and American Cheese on a Sesame Bagel: 390 cal, 9 pts
1 cup of beef barley soup: 90 cal, 2 pts

Snack:
15 Fat Free Sour Cream and Onion Pringles: 70 cal, 3 pts

Dinner:
Parmesan Crusted chicken - 160  cal, 5 pts
1/2 cup lemon risotto - 315 cal, 7 pts
green beans

Cross Country Skied today and freezing meals

The conditions were perfect for Cross Country skiing - over 20 degrees, lots of snow, and it was a weekend!  So, I went to a lovely little forest preserve close to my house and enjoyed.  What a great aerobic exercise too!   Feeling a little stiff tonight, but nothing Advil can't help.  Here are a few photos from my exercise adventure.

I also cooked two new recipes for dinner tonight - a Mac and Cheese and a Green Beans Almondine. The Mac and Cheese was good, but I won't make it again.  I only repeat recipes that I think are on the fantastic level (I'm picky when it comes to flavor and where I spend my calories).  But I did divide the left overs into individual meals, and marked on each how many calories and points, and put them in the freezer.  So, this keeps the portion sizes down.

The green beans were fabulous and I'll be making those again for both me and company.

Today's Menu:

1 Egg - 70 cal, 2 pts
.8 oz sharp cheddar cheese - 95 cal, 2 pts
1.8 ounces sourdough bread -130 cal, 3 pts
1 tsp. Smart Balance Light - 17 cal, 0 pts
2 slices thick cut bacon - 100 cal, 3 pts
1/2 Mcdonald's iced coffee with sugar free caramel - 45 cal, 2 pt

Lunch:
6 oz chicken - 180 cal, 6 pts
1/2 cup lemon risotto - 315 cal, 7 pts
green beans

Snack:

Lost 1 pound, and trying Sensa (I know, I know)

I lost a pound from yesterday to today, so that's great.  I also decided to add another ingredient to my attempt to get lard off my butt.  I started trying Sensa yesterday.  I know, I know.  But it worked for Patty Stanger (Millionaire Matchmaker) so I just decided to see what that stuff does.  Well, after day One of using it, I would say I do think the stuff helps.  I was a lot less hungry yesterday and so it was easier to not snack.  Hmm, maybe there is something to that stuff.  But I am not just expecting Sensa to be a magic cure.   That's impossible.  I know good old fashioned less calories and more exercise is the bottom line.  The trick is working at that every bite of every meal of every day.  That's where it's hard.  So, I'm seriously just trying to attack this with everything I can.  This blog, Weight Watcher meetings, MyFitnessPal, and now Sensa too.

The way Sensa works is you just sprinkle a little of it on all your food.  It seems to do something to help curb your hunger.  Stay posted to see if that really keeps helping.

Official WW Weigh In today - small gain but hey, it could have been worse

Just got my official Weight Watcher's weigh in - gained .8 pounds.  Hey, considering how many calories and points I was eating every day, I'm happy.  I know I just need to tighten things up and I'll do better.  For the most part I'm in control.

The meetings are so vital for me.  I just feel so different after I go.  Really motivated and encouraged.  I know it takes time and effort, but I absolutely have to go to meetings to stay focused.  I just know that about me.  So, I go. Even when I have a gain, or when I don't feel like doing any work on this.  I go, and it gets me to want to do it again.  So, I recommend attending Weight Watcher meetings in person at least weekly.

More later.  Gotta go live my day.  I'm going to a play tonight so I might not post today's menu til tomorrow.  I will be getting back late.  :)

Bummer.  2 pounds came back on this morning.  Oh well.  I think those stuffed shells might have been worse than I thought.  This is the problem with non-chain restaurants - you can't get their nutrition info and you have to guess.  Sometimes you just guess wrong.  Oh well.  I must just keep tracking and trying.

I had a free lunch today at work but it turned out to be McDonald's and I ate too much.  But I did real good - just had a salad for dinner with tuna on it.  So, hopefully I'll be good for the day.

Every day has it's challenges.  The object isn't to wait until there is no stress in my life, no surprises, no challenges.  The object is to not overeat no matter what comes my way.  I MUST learn and do this.  Period.

Ate out 3 meals today, and my issue with WW Points

Yep, ate out all 3 meals today.  It was just one of those days.  I think I did good though.  2 meals at McD's, one at Benards Cafe (Italian place).

I also will show you how much work it was for me to compute the points to just 2 items I ate.  See at McDonald's I modified the standard sandwiches - took off the egg with the yolk and had them use the egg white.  And then for lunch, I modified the Quarter Pounder by removing one piece of bread and cheese.  See all the work required to compute the points.  Sorry, but I liked the old WW points which basically equated one point for 50 calories.  This new way is soooooo complicated.  Sigh.  But if you can stand all that, it is a very very good program.  You're sure to lose on it.

Breakfast:
McDonald's Bacon Egg and Cheese Biscuit, substituting the regular egg for an egg white - 420 cal, 11 pts
1/2 Medium McDonald's Ice Coffee with Sugar Free Caramel -  45 cal, 2 pt

Woot woot - dropped another pound!

Yep, a pound fell off and almost 2 (5 total since Jan 2 when I started this).  I'm very very encouraged.  Going to keep up this blog for sure.

I made the most delicious Risotto tonight - one of my all time best recipes.  It is NOT low cal, but it is HIGH flavor.  But you see, I'm not on a diet.  I am doing a lifestyle adjustment.  And so I DO eat delicious foods.  If I want to lose this weight and keep it off, I have to eat what I love.  So, yes, it includes carbs, even though the diet fad today is that carbs are bad.  Friends, eating too much is bad.  If you ate too much fat, that is bad.  If you ate mounds of bacon, that is bad.  If you only ate carrots all day, that would be bad.  Balance is what we need, and that includes carbs.  So, I don't agree that they are "the" forbidden food.  I've lost a lot of weight a few times now, and I always ate carbs doing it.  It's about portion size, moderation, balance.  Come one, isn't that common sense?

I had another good moment today when they brought in these huge cookies to a meeting after lunch.  I first looked in MyFitnessPal to see how many calories they were - probably about 440.  Yeah, way too many.  But I also was concerned that if I didn't enjoy them at all I'd overeat on something else later in rebellion.  So, I just had half - 220 calories.  That's not terrible.  I enjoyed the delicious cookie and didn't blow the day.  Yep, that's how it's done.

Today's Menu:
McDonald's Fruit and Maple Oatmeal - 290 cal, 7 pts
(Now this is good Oatmeal - fills you up all morning.  You can get it without sugar, too - 6 pts then)
Coffee with Half and Half - 60 cal, 1 pt

Lunch:
Moogie's Chicken shish-ka-bob - 180 cal, 6 pts
1/2 a pita - 80 cal , 1 pt
1/2 a Cream of Chicken Soup - 110 cal, 2 pts
4 saltines - 30 cal, 1 pt
Just a little bit of Greek potatoes - 45 cal, 1 pt
Salad with Italian dressing - 20 cal, 0 pts

Snack: 1/2 Chocolate Chip Cookie (big one) 220 cal, 6 pts

Dinner:
Broccoli and Cheese Stuffed Chicken Breast - 230 cal, 6 pts
1/2 cup Lemon Risotto - 325 cal, 9 pts
Green Beans - 20 cal, 0 pts

Snack: 2 frozen bananas via my "Go Nanas" machine - 160 cal
Sugar Free Caramel topping - 50 cal, 1 pt

So much for Special K Oatmeal for breakfast

So I ran out of eggs and cheese, my favorite high protein breakfast, but I had some Special K Instant Oatmeal so I gave that a try.  Well, I won't do that again.  After mixing with water it is only about 1/2 cup of food and it isn't thick and rich.  I tried to not eat it at all, but I was hungry.  And after I ate it, I was still hungry.  Since it was only 190 calories, I figured I could still eat 100-200 calories and still be good.  What did I choose?  A donut of course!  Yes, it was good.  It would have been fine calorie wise if I hadn't had the oatmeal too.  So, I'm kind of high for the day, but I think I should be OK.  So far I'm holding still - keeping those 4 pounds off.  That's still good.  Tomorrow will be a better day. And at least I still tracked everything I ate and counted.  It would have been worse otherwise.

I also had to eat out dinner tonight and I ate at Panera again.  Did the "you pick 2" thing.  It was good and satisfied.  Love Panera!

So that's today's challenges.

How to enhance your green beans

Yippee - lost that pound I gained over the weekend already.  All right.  4 pounds still off.  Now to make progress and move forward onto more off.  Hope so.  I'll keep doing this crazy blog and maybe it'll happen.

One of my favorite easy things to enhance a simple vegetable like green beans, or even a salad or steak is to take a big portabello mushroom and just cook it in a simmering low sodium chicken broth for about 10 minutes.  Then cut it up in bite sized pieces.  Really delicious and zero points.  I also chop up about half a shallot and cook that in just a little pam/butter/low cal margarine and add that to your beans.  Green beans don't have to be boring.  Use Sea Salt too for a good seasoning flavor.

My Vege Soup Recipe, How I satisfy my love for Indian Food and my fancy tart

Only gained back 1 pound yesterday from all that eating - yeah!  I did pretty well today, although I cooked a fancy dessert but I was really careful on my portion size.  The remaining dessert will be a treat in the office tomorrow.  It was delicious.  I like to cook, and try out new recipes.  I had some left over cranberries and so I found a recipe to make with them - an Almond-Cranberry tart.  Very good.  One slice is 342 calories/10 points  So, it needs to leave my home.

I also cooked my fabulous Vegetable Soup today.  This is a zero points WW soup, dressed up to actually taste good.  Here's the recipe:

48 ounces Low Sodium College Hill Chicken Broth (I think it's better than Swanson)
1 chopped onion
1 minced clove of garlic
juice from 1/2 to 1 full fresh lemon
1 can of Rotel
1 can of Mexican Stewed tomatoes (if you can't find those, just use Stewed Tomatoes, but don't use Italian Stewed Tomatoes)
4-5 dashes of Tabasco sauce
2 tsp. Mrs. Dash
Can of corn
Can of sliced or diced water chestnuts
2 10 oz. bags of frozen vegetables
1 tsp salt

Bring to a boil, then simmer uncovered for 1 hour.  That's it!

I love Indian Food, but Indian Buffets are a guaranteed gain for me.  So I cook my own.  This is my favorite curry sauce.  But it is sold at Williams-Sonoma, which isn't the most convenient place to get sauce.  I don't mix it with anything - just use as is.  It is incredible.  1/4 a jar is 180 calories/ 5pts but you will be so satisfied with that you'll be good.  Then just throw in some cooked chicken and serve it over brown rice.  I love Trader Joe's Frozen Brown Rice.  It cooks in 3 minutes in the microwave and it is delicious.
